According to some locals, the colourful pebbles found
on ‘Glass Beach’ at Fort Bragg in California are the
solidified tears of mermaids. In reality, however, they
are nothing more than garbage. Up until 1967, it was
common practice for towns in the surrounding area to
dump refuse in the ocean, among which were bottles,
aquariums and other glass debris. After years in the
ocean, the glass has broken into small pieces and been
polished by the sand and waves, leaving innumerable
jewel-like pebbles on the beach.
