ARTS SPECIAL: SOW HOGS THE LIMELIGHT

Step aside Francis Bacon. A sow rescued from an abattoir as a
piglet and brought to an animal sanctuary in South Africa’s Western
Cape region in 2016, has been making her mark in the art world.
Brandishing a paintbrush in her snout, Pigcasso enthusiastically
tosses her head to create bright, bold strokes across a canvas
propped up in her sty. She began her career as an artist when
her owners noticed her love of colour and paint brushes. Her
paintings now sell for almost $4,000, with the proceeds
going to animal welfare. REUTERS

CHEESY MUSIC
Exposing cheese to music could give it more flavour – and hip hop
might be better than Mozart. Nine wheels of Emmental cheese
weighing ten kilograms each were placed in separate wooden crates
to test the impact of music on flavour and aroma. The cheeses were
exposed 24 hours a day to either a hip hop track, Mozart’s ‘Magic
Flute’ opera or Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’. The hip hop
sample topped the list in terms of fruitiness, smell and taste. “The
differences were very clear,” said a Swiss TV chef. REUTERS

By June 2018, boat crossings to the
Greek i slands across the Mediter-
ranean had dropped dramatically,
Turkey striking a deal with the EU to
limit the movement of migrants. The
Captain, now living in his own small
apartment in Sweden, still helps
people cross when needed. But the
need for relentless nightly shifts has
waned and he now spends more time
on humanitarian cases. He is study-
ing and hopes to return to work.
Back in Vigo, Angeles is conflicted.
She enjoys more sleep and her work
is back on track. But it has been diffi-

cult to step back into her old routine;
helping migrants cross the eastern
Aegean was the “adventure of my
life,” she admits wistfully.
Angeles can’t rest easy knowing
there are hundreds of thousands of
Syrians and Iraqis out there, par-
ticularly children, still suffering.
When the conflict finally ends, the
media will move on – but she knows
it will be only the beginning for the
survivors.
Angeles remains committed, say-
ing, “With one finger and one phone,
you can help. All of us can.”
