C

onversations about vehicle
emissions, climate change and
regulations are likely to bring up
‘Dieselgate’ the biggest scandal that
rocked the automotive industry in 2015
when the US Environmental Protection
Agency revealed that Volkswagen, Audi and
Porsche had been cheating emission tests
by installing a defeat device on more than
600,000 diesel vehicles in the US. Since then,
governments and the automotive industry
have introduced new testing methods and
more stringent air quality standards to
regulate NOx emissions.
What if reducing NOx, like CO2 emissions,
was a top priority in every fl eet operators’s
sustainability strategy? The UAE has one
such example: Emirates Leisure Retail (ELR),
a subsidiary of the Emirates Group, has been
conducting emission trials for more than a
year on its light-duty delivery trucks using the
Zaeto D-Zel Aid diesel additive, as part of its
corporate sustainability strategy to reduce both
carbon emissions and NOx.
During these ongoing trials, ELR has seen
reductions in CO2 by 50 –70%, NOx by 35%,
and CO by 8% as well as improvement in fuel
economy by at least 10%. The cover story in this
issue presents results of the idle and stall tests
conducted on four ELR trucks in April 2019. ELR
aims to fi nd the ideal combination of diesel,
additives, pre-treatment and aft er-treatment
that works best for its fl eet and contributes to
the company’s sustainability strategy.
We also visited the BAUS ETT facility in
Dubai to fi nd out how the special vehicle
converter manufactures emergency service
vehicles according to European standards.
BAUS ETT has modifi ed and delivered over
500 emergency service vehicles including
ambulances at its factory in Dubai for the
GCC markets. The company is now using its
ambulance conversion expertise to expand
into related applications such as wheelchair
accessible vehicles and non-emergency

patient transport vehicles. Other specialised
conversions include mobile workshops, X-ray
screening vehicles, outside broadcasting
vans, welfare buses, mobile clinics, mortuary
vehicles, and luxury minibuses. Another
emerging market for the company is 4x
conversion of minibuses to enable off -road
transportation of people, particularly tourists.
The powered access industry is on the cusp
of a VR revolution, with MEWP simulators now
so advanced that the International Powered
Access Federation (IPAF) is confi dent that they
can now form an integral part of delivering
candidate training and assessment.
In 2018, IPAF led an industry-wide
consultation into VR technology and produced
a detailed strategy paper based on the
fi ndings. IPAF members worked with IPAF
to produce a policy document on how VR
systems can be eff ectively and safely harnessed
to train MEWP operators. This led to a set of
recommendations that are being implemented
throughout 2019, the fi rst of which was to
integrate IPAF’s existing globally-recognised
operator training into the VR realm. The trials
are taking place on specifi c simulators that
have been approved for this purpose by IPAF’s
training department.
Last year, UAE-based powered access
equipment rental company Rapid Access
introduced a VR simulator comprising scissor lift
and boom lift modules.
Recently, Access Hire Middle East installed
the world’s fi rst JLG AccessReady VR simulator
simulator at the company’s training centre in
Dubai and incorporated it into their operator
training programme. The JLG AccessReady
XR simulator provides VR-based training
for operators of all skill levels, ranging from
controls familiarization to machine operation
and advanced spatial awareness challenges.
This type of immersive training optimizes the
learning experience while preparing operators
to effi ciently use the controls and familiarize
themselves with boom lift operation.
