To Aug 17 Philip Noakes: Sculptural Silver – an
elegant body of work, from one of the foremost
silversmiths working and teaching in Australia.
This exhibition is supported by the Department of
Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
Also, Nikulinsky Naturally – a survey of Philippa
Nikulinsky’s work from the 1970s to the present.
Exploring the ways in which she continues to
interrogate the botanical riches of the Western
Australian landscape. To Dec 7 The Artist and
Her Work – drawn from the Cruthers Collection of
Women’s Art exploring Lady Sheila Cruthers’ collection
strategy of acquiring an artist’s work in addition
to a self-portrait, with the two works often hung
side by side, showcasing the breadth and depth of
women’s art practice. Also, Out of the Boxes and
into the Desert – explores the Berndt Museum of
Anthropology’s collection of paintings from the Central
Desert with works of art that have been inaccessible
for decades. These include stories of ancestral beings
that travelled across country, through waterholes
and into the stars. Aug 31 to Dec 7 HERE&NOW19
- surveys the practice of artists working with fibre
and textiles, and showcases their use of traditional,
contemporary and experimental techniques. Also,
Cosmopolitan: Art from the 1930s in the University
of Western Australia Art Collection and the Cruthers
Collection of Women’s Art – showcasing artwork
from the 1930s – a stimulating period in Australian
art, defined by the effects of travel and the exchange
of ideas, both artistic and political.
