Margaret Olley:

A Generous Life

Queensland Art Gallery |
Gallery of Modern Art
Until 13 October, 2019
Queensland

Paying tribute to Kazimir Malevich’s
Suprematist Composition: White on White
(1918), Melbourne artists Anna Caione and
Fiona Halse present a series of paintings
that explore the philosophical and poetic
associations of the colour white.

Caione and Halse express the synergies and
divergences in their approach to abstraction
and monochromatic qualities through the
process of surface manipulation, gestural
expression and subtle variations, bringing the
achromatic hue to life with an assortment of
personal meanings and range of intriguing
interpretive possibilities.

Margaret Olley (1923-2011) immersed herself
in art, her own as well as those she supported.
This retrospective celebrates Olley’s
extraordinary life as an artist, mentor, friend,
collector and donor, featuring more than 100
paintings and drawings from throughout
her career, including her formative years in
Brisbane. Olley’s enduring love of nature
found expression in exuberant still life works,
while her self-portraits and interiors shared
colourful compositions and raw, intimate
self-reflection. The exhibition includes
depictions of Olley by other artists, and works
she collected.
