CONFESSIONS OF

AN EX-SERIAL DATER:

HOW TO ONLINE DATE AND SURVIVE

OPINION

ARE YOU A PLUS-SIZED WOMAN IN YOUR LATE 20S

WITH NO PLANS, NO MAN AND NO JOB, YET YOU

DECIDE THAT IT’D BE A BRILLIANT IDEA TO PACK

YOUR BAGS AND MOVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY

TO START ANEW; LEAVING FRIENDS, FAMILY

AND FAMILIAR SPACES BEHIND? SEX-POSITIVE

ADVOCATE, JASMINE KING, WHO WAS IN THE SAME

POSITION TWO YEARS AGO, OPENS UP ABOUT

THE DOS AND DON’TS OF ONLINE DATING.

I was single for more than a year prior
to moving to Kuala Lumpur from
Kota Kinabalu. When you’re a single
working woman living in a small town,
things can be quite boring and you
tend to bury yourself in your work.
So instead of doing that, I decided to
go on dates and meet new people as
it was more fun, and boy, was I right!
Not only did I meet some of the most
interesting people, but I’ve also made
lifelong friends along the way.
Moving to KL was a whole
different experience. The dating pool
was bigger and more exciting. In fact,
I went on dates almost every week and
although I was tired, I have to admit
that it was quite fun. But alas, I’d
be lying if I said that my experience
wasn’t without my fair share of pain,
heartbreaks, disappointments and
ghosters. Aren’t ghosters just the worst?

HOW TO DATE:
Think about your intention
Why are you on a dating app? Is that
dating app/website the right one for you
or should you change? Though dating
apps in general have an
objective to find you a
potential partner, different
apps/websites serve
different purposes.
If you’re looking for
a serious relationship, an
app like Tinder might
not suit you. Why not
change to OkCupid or Bumble instead?
OkCupid asks specific questions to
see whether your personality matches
the other person’s, while Bumble gives
women the power to send a message to
someone they’re attracted to. If you’re
not searching for a serious relationship
and just want to meet new people (maybe
when you’re travelling to a new city, for
example), something like Tinder would
save you time and serve your purpose!

After three years of serial dating,
I finally decided to put my dating
hat away and commit myself to a
monogamous relationship. Nonetheless,
I thought that it’d be a great opportunity
for me to share with you a tip or two
on how I survived the dating world.
