Recently, I got the chance to stay

in an ultrachic design hotel in

Singapore. When I went down

for breakfast one morning, I saw

a long queue at one corner of the

restaurant and discovered that the

guests were watching AUSCA (the

Autonomous Service Chef Associate)

aka Eggbot, the world’s first culinary

robot prototype, prepare eggs in an

omelette or a sunny-side-up style.

Despite my initial impressed

reaction, I found out after a few

rounds that while AUSCA tries its best to meet every guest’s

order within a certain time frame, it still has a lot to improve

on in the presentation department. The yolks in the sunny

side ups it makes are usually no longer intact when served,

and the omelette it puts together always ends up looking like

a disaster if it’s not flipped over before being served! If this is

what the future looks like, I’m afraid I’m not very keen on it

because as much as the Eggbot adds cool points to the hotel

and is a pull factor to the egg station, it’s unable to deliver

what I like best – good ol’ scrambled eggs – with a human

touch. So off to the buffet section I went, and thankfully,

there was a good serving of scrambled eggs waiting for me!

rapidly that it’s almost impossible to keep up with the latest
