  1. TIDY UP ALL AT ONCE
According to the KonMari method, don’t
start cleaning in small steps, but instead,
take out everything you own and declutter
in one single session. This way, you can
avoid reverting to your previous habit of
being untidy, Marie claims. Before the
organising can take place, you’ll have to
first discard the items you no longer use.

  2. ORGANISE BY CATEGORY, NOT LOCATION
When sorting out your items, Marie advises to not start at one place before
moving on to the next as this can cause confusion when you have many of
the same type of items stored in multiple locations. Ummi says, “I bought
tiny storage containers so that I can store my makeup according to categories
beautifully. On top of that, I receive a lot of PR boxes that can be reused to
store some of the larger bottles. And now, I have a category for everything –
foundations, primers, cleansers, mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks – you name it!”

  3. DO IT IN ORDER
While Marie has a specific order when
it comes to organising – for example,
begin with clothes followed by books,
    papers, miscellany and mementos –
there isn’t a set of rules when it comes
to cosmetics. Therefore, we suggest the
following: start with what you use the
most and keep the rest for last, so begin
with your base followed by foundations,
    eyeshadows, blushers, lipsticks, etc.
Then set a different order for skincare
and stick to it the next time you decide
    to ‘KonMari’ your home.

  4. DETERMINE IF THE ITEMS

SPARK JOY
You’ve probably heard this phrase one too many
times since the beginning of the year and here’s
the deal behind it; Marie says that you need to
see whether the items you own give you a sense
of happiness, or in other words, if they ‘spark joy’
in your life. The items do not necessarily need
to be functional; as long as you’d love to have
them in your life then you can keep them. Ummi says,
“While I find it hard to let go of any of my
makeup, I generally use the cosmetics’ shelf
life as a rule of thumb.”

“This Chanel scent definitely
makes me happy!”

Foundations: “These can
last for a good year or up to a
year-and-a-half once opened.”

Eyeshadows: “I have a lot of
palettes and looking at my collection
makes me happy. Thankfully,
powder eyeshadows last for up
to two years and more, and I
always make sure to use a brush
so I don’t contaminate them with
bacteria from my fingers.”

Lipsticks: “These can hold up for
about a year or two but if you notice
any change in their smell or colour,
then it’s best to throw them out.”
