FUELLED BY A PASSION FOR
HAIRSTYLING, JUSTIN CHIN
FROM E.EX HAIR SALON &
ACADEMY, JOHOR BAHRU
PROVES HIS WORTH AS
WINNER OF THE SALON
CREATION CATEGORY IN THE
SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL
BEAUTY INNOVATOR AWARD

  1. WE TALK TO HIM
    ABOUT HIS CRAFT BEHIND
    THE SCENES OF THIS SHOOT.

FEMALE: How did you
get into hairstyling?
Justin: “It’s been five
years since I started
in this industry. My
interest for hairstyling
began much earlier
than that; my mother
was a hairstylist too so
I’ve seen her do other
people’s hair all my
life. After high school,
I enrolled in a hairstyling
academy and now, here I am.”

F: Do you have a signature style
when it comes to styling hair?
J: “Not really – my work is
very versatile. For instance,
when I do colouring, I can
go all out colourful or tone it
down with warm colours; it all
boils down to what the client
wants. When it comes to cuts
and styling, I get inspired by
what I see in magazines.”

F: Your winning look for the
FEMALE Cover Model Search
2018 was stunning! Tell us
the inspiration behind it.
J: “It was inspired by the
ocean. The texture and colour
of the water when the waves
hit the shore are exactly
what I envisioned and later
transformed the idea into hair.”

F: What do you find most
challenging about your job?
J: “I don’t see anything as
challenging per se. All I need
to do is put in the hard work
and be disciplined so that I can
eventually achieve what I set
out to do. That being said,
avant-garde creations or
matching a hair colour to a
person’s skin tone can be tricky.”

F: What’s the worst thing a
person can do to his/her hair?
J: “Leaving bleached hair to
air-dry; not only will it look
messy but the hair cuticles
are raised and if continued
to be left like that, they’ll be
damaged in the long run.”

F: Which hairstyling tool
can’t you live without?
J: “Scissors, simply cos I can’t
do my job without a pair!”
