PUMP IT UP
Exercising can prevent heart disease, but for those with type-
diabetes, impaired heart function may leave them feeling wary about
strenuous workouts. Enter a study from the University of
Otago, which found that not only are HIIT workouts
safe for those with type-2 diabetes but they can
also help heart function. Researchers had
11 middle-aged adults with type-2 diabetes
complete a 25-minute workout that
included 10 minutes of high-intensity
exercise at least three times a week.
By the end of the three-month period,
participants who had completed the
programme saw improved heart
function, even without any changes to
their medication or diet. Always speak to
your doctor before increasing the intensity
of your exercise regime.

YOUTHFUL

YOGA
Downward dog may be the key to
staying young, says a review of 22
clinical trials. Researchers from the
University of Edinburgh looked at the
findings of the randomised trials and
found that compared to those who
didn’t exercise, practising yoga helped
improve balance, flexibility and limb
strength in older adults. Compared
to other light physical activities like
walking, yoga was more effective at
improving lower body strength and
flexibility. There were mental benefits
too, with participants experiencing
reduced depression and improved
sleep quality and vitality.
