BRAIN GAMES
Keeping up with the weekly
crossword may shave years off
your cognitive age. A study
published in the International
Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry
looked at data from just over 19,
participants who took part in the
PROTECT study – a long-term,
online study looking at cognitive
health in ageing. They found that
the more people aged 50 and over
engaged in puzzles like Sudoku and
crosswords, the better their brain
functioned – up to 10 years younger
than their actual age. When it
came to short-term memory
tests, puzzlers had brain function
equivalent to eight years younger.

Holistic

health
A bad night’s sleep may leave
us missing out on vital nutrients.
Research presented at the annual
meeting of the American Society
for Nutrition found that people
who get fewer than seven hours
of sleep a night consumed less
vitamins and minerals, including
magnesium, calcium, zinc, and
vitamins A and D. Researchers
aren’t sure if it’s the lack of sleep
itself that causes lower nutrient
intake, or if having low levels of
these nutrients affects sleep, but
recommend that those who have
difficulty nodding off spend
some extra time making sure
their diet is nutrient rich.
