Interior Designer – September 2019

(Nandana) #1

both the fixed seating and swivel stools invite
customers into shell-like structures made from
sumptuous velvets and soft leather. Reeded glass
panels, divide the space between the bar and
restaurant spaces while mirrors feature throughout
the design to create light and an increased sense
of space.

DESIGN CHALLENGES
The venue came with some significant design
challenges, being situated on the lower ground
floor not only caused a visibility issue for drawing
custom, but also practical issues. Retaining as
much head height as possible was key to keeping
the space light and seemingly spacious and this
required careful planning of the mechanics to
service the restaurant.

Tony said, “At the centre of the design is a huge,
curved oyster bar that is visible from the street;
this was key to overcoming the visibility issue but
also in providing the casual seating arrangement.
White marble and light oak create elegant curves,
which provide relaxed separations between diners.
While soft ‘oyster pink’ hued tiles and ‘wave like’
patterned fabric wall coverings give a warm and
inviting feel.
“We also installed a huge hanging mirror to reflect
and make a statement of the ice bed of oysters
that lie in wait.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
With no real history to the site, Faber looked for
inspiration around the philosophy of the restaurant,
a club where friends could meet and dine

regularly in a relaxed ‘open-house’ environment.
The Oyster Club’ evolved from a group of
intellectuals and scientists from Edinburgh in the
1770’s who would regularly meet up to debate and
exchange ideas over oysters. Founding members
can been seen celebrated through bespoke
artwork around the restaurant.
“Having built up a trusting working relationship with
Faber, we gave them quite a lot of freedom with
the brief and the results have not disappointed!
We knew they would deliver a fantastic design,
but the finished article is truly outstanding,”
Adam concluded.
