BRIDGE
BY STEVE BECKER

Howgoodareyou at guessing
two-wayfinesses foramissing
queen?
Assumeyou’re in six dia-
monds, andWestleads the jack
ofclubs. Youcover with dum-
my’squeen and win East’sking
with the ace. If youcould see the
adverse cards at this point, you’d
make seven easily. But you can’t
see themissing cards and so
can’t guaranteemaking even six.
Twodifferentlinesofplay are
available. One is totry toguess
whichopponent has thequeen
of spades andfinesse accord-
ingly. Youwill make eitherfive
or sevenbyplaying this way.

Theothermethodofplay has
nothing whatever todowith
guesswork.Yousimplyhope that
East has eitheroneorbothmiss-
ing heart honours, in which case
you’re sure tomake the slam.
Theodds are 3 -1 that East was
dealtatleastoneof themissing
heart honours. So,ifyoufeel
you haveless than a 7 5% chance
of guessing thelocationof the
queenof spades, youshouldtry
yourluckin hearts.
You begin by cashing the
aceof hearts at tricktwo, draw
tworoundsof trump ending
in dummy andlead the jackof
hearts, discarding a clubif East

followslow. AfterWest takes the
jackwith theking, you ruff his
clubreturn high, cash the K-A
of spades and, if thequeen does
not appear,lead the 10of hearts,
planning todiscard the jackof
spades if East followslow again.
Of course, if East covers the 10
with thequeen, you ruff high,
cross to dummy’sremaining
trump and discard your spade
loseron the heart nine.
Thislineofplay succeeds un-
lessWest hasboth heart honours
and thequeenof spades is not
singletonordoubleton, giving
youbetter than an 80% chance
tomake the slam.
