Anna Ancher

8 February 2020 - 24 May 2020

SMK presents the largest ever ret-
rospective exhibition about Danish
painter Anna Ancher. Thematically,
Ancher’s paintings were influenced

works of design - across diverse cre-
ative fields - all united by their fe-
male authorship. Showcasing design-
ers Zaha Hadid, Neri Oxman, Elliat
Rich and Helen Kontouris, Designing
Women highlights the opportunity
for women to shape the future, in a
world increasingly defined by design.

Berlin’s Alte Nationalgalerie is bal-
ancing art history’s gender gap with
a show timed to the 100-year anni-
versary of the first female students
admitted to the Kunstakademie art
school. Artists on view include Sa-
bine Lepsius, Maria Slavona, Caro-
line Bardua, sculptor Elisabet Ney,
and many lesser-known figures whose
work will be displayed at the museum
for the first time.

by a lifelong connection to the light
and geography of Skagen. Together
with her husband Michael Ancher
and Theodor Philipsen, Anna An-
cher is regarded as one of the most
accomplished impressionist painters
in Danish art history.

Louisiana presents the first exhibi-
tion in Scandinavia with Austrian
avant-garde artist Birgit Jürgenssen.
Playing with different identities and
the deconstruction of the patriarchal
world order became major features
of Jürgenssen’s work. In drawings
and photography, Jürgenssen’s pre-
ferred media, she delved into the role
of woman in society. In one of her
best-known photographic works we
see Jürgenssen through a glass door
dressed as housewife with her face
pressed against the door, upon which
is written “Ich möchte hier raus!” - “I
want out of here!” - out of the home,
that is. In a drawing from the same
time the housewife is depicted literal-
ly as a wild lion in a cage. Jürgenssen’s
works are not only a war-cry against
the structural oppression of women;
at the same time, they present the
possibility that a woman (or man)
can break out of a role and don the
mask or identity she or he wants for
her/himself.
