Artist 25 LOST BETWEEN WORLDS

Søndergaard’s rooms, which have a similar sense to Vilhelm Hammershøi’s 19th century paintings of
apartment interiors in Copenhagen, were photographed in a renaissance castle. The castle had stood empty
for 50 years, and its glorious rooms, coloured in different shades of pastel, were devoid of furnishings. “The
people who owned the castle had removed everything and it was just standing there waiting. It had been
standing there empty for so many years. For me, it was the thought of time standing empty for so many years,
like a cylinder of time. My mother was a young girl at that time.” She started looking for more spaces that
existed in that same state of quiet expectation of something to come. “Making these photographs was a way
for me to be quiet, and to dwell on this quietness. It was almost like meditating.”
