Straight needles are great but it’s useful to know that you can use
circular needles to knit projects at too. This can be particularly
handy when you have lots of stitches and you’re struggling to
keep them on the needles but also when you are knitting projects
with thick yarn where the weight of the fabric can drag, affecting
tension and making joints ache. It’s also great if you nd long
needles unwieldy (and for not poking fellow passengers on
the train!).

I’m knitting a blanket on straight needles
but it’s really heavy and my wrists are
aching. Is there anything I can do?

I’ve recently seen some square knitting
needles. They look a bit odd – don’t they
make the stitches a funny shape?

I thought much the same thing when I rst saw
them, but actually they are very comfortable and don’t make any
difference at all to your knitting. As with all needles, it’s a good
idea if you can try them before you buy so ask at a knitting friend
or your local knitting group if you could borrow a pair. Your yarn
shop might let you take a pair out to hold and see how they feel,
too. I think you’ll know straight away if they are for you!
