H

ey, what’s up? This past
month has been absolutely
crazy and full of awesome
festivals. Between playing
with Employed To Serve and just
going to hang out, I’ve been to Slam
Dunk, All Points East and Download
Festival, to name a few. There were
lots of bands watched and many miles
walked, and I found a few cool new
bands to check out.
First up, we have Health. I caught their
set at All Points East after being a fan of
theirs for a while. Their tent was packed
out, and had a one-in-one-out queue
of over 100 people to
get in at one point.
The band released
their new album, Vol
4:: Slaves Of Fear,
this year. It melds
influences of metal
and trip-hop, and
they’re one of the
most exciting bands
in their genre. Their
live show is amazing,
and they have a whole
arsenal of guitar effects
and sledgehammer
drums to make for the
perfect soundtrack for
a massive moshpit.
Changing the pace
a little bit, I want
to talk about
Massachusetts’
Fuming Mouth and
their debut album The
Grand Descent – one
of the most satisfying
records I’ve heard all
year. Album opener
Fatalism is a perfect
overview of what to
expect with punishing
riffs and D-beats. The
band perfectly blend
death metal and
hardcore, and they’re
definitely not for the
faint-hearted. Make
sure you check them
out, if you think you
can handle it.
I found Chat
Pile whilst down a
Bandcamp Discover
rabbit-hole (a regular

Sunday evening occurrence). They
released their EP This Dungeon Earth
earlier this year. On the first track, Face,
the listener is greeted with an all-out
bass dirge and sinister vocals. Their
sound is hard to pin down, but I’d liken
them to Australia’s Idylls or Daughters
from Rhode Island, and they generally
have an Ipecac Records feel to them,
in that way that their bands very much
do their own thing and don’t fit into any
genre pigeonhole.
Cambridge, Ontario must be a horrible
place to have produced a band like
Greber. The band released a split EP
with Minors earlier this
year, and their side
is full of hate. Bands
like Fuck The Facts,
Trap Them and Secret
Cutter shine through
as reference points on
this all-out-war release,
with punk drums,
feedback guitars
and strangled vocals
everywhere. What’s
not to love?
Finally, I’m going
to turn down the hate
with Trade Wind and
their album Certain
Freedoms, which just
came out on End Hits
Records. They feature
members of Stray
From The Path and
Stick To Your Guns, but
don’t be fooled: this
is far from a hardcore
record. It’s a superb
album with lots of
layers and influences
from indie and post-
rock. You owe it to
yourself to check them
out, as they have some
of the best hooks I’ve
heard in a long time!
As ever, thanks
for checking out my
recommendations. See
you next month!
