FRANCESCHI
(VOCALS)

This is the first time you’ll be playing
2000trees and you’re headlining – has
it been one you’ve been wanting to do
for a while?
“Yeah, man. 2000trees is one of those
festivals that’s always been on our radar
but we’ve never done it. This summer
we made a conscious decision that we
wanted to cover as much space on the
UK festival platform as possible. We’ve
heard great things about the festival;
about it being a serene, beautiful,
scenic environment. By all accounts, it
seems like a different festival to what
we’ve done before, and it’s a chance to
share the bill with some cool bands.”

Is there anyone you’re particularly
excited about seeing?
“It’s annoying that we can’t be there for
the entire thing, because we’d like to
see Deaf Havana and While She Sleeps.
There’s stuff I want to see, but we’ll
have to see what time we get there,
and how long until we have to play.”

What kind of set can we expect from You
Me At Six?
“We’re doing a lot of different festival
slots this year, so we’re curating various
sets that will be applicable for each

one. We’re thinking about doing the
more rock-driven stuff, but we’re not
really sure because we’ve been making
new music and haven’t really been
rehearsing too much. So, once we get
into the rehearsal space we will know
then. I think 2000trees seems like a
more community festival; people will
go each year regardless of the line-up.
Those people come every year and

they know what experience they want,
so we’ll make sure we don’t fuck with
that experience. But we will also want
to do what we do, so hopefully it all
works together.”

You’ve just mentioned that you’re
working on new music. VI came out
back in October – are the creative juices
flowing again already?
“Yeah, but we didn’t really stop writing.
We flipped our mindset on making
records because with Cavalier Youth
[2014] and Night People [2017], there

was too much time between each one
and time got away from us, essentially.
We decided from that point forwards
that we would start writing more on
the road, even if it’s just initial ideas

  • a chorus or a verse, or whatever. If
people think VI was different, then
they’re not going to know what to do
with themselves when they hear the
new stuff. It’s definitely got guitars, but
I think we have to keep stuff fresh for
ourselves – we don’t want to do the
same thing over and over again. I think
new music will be coming out a lot
    sooner than people anticipate.”

And finally, you’ll also be doing a gig of
all of your singles later in the summer at
Gunnersville. How did that come up?
“When the conversation started with
the promoter of the festival, they said
they wanted us to come in and create
a bill. So we gave them a list of bands
we wanted to play, people like Jimmy
Eat World. But then we realised that
to even share a stage with them, never
mind play after them, was a tall order!
How have things even got to this level
of jokes that we’re meant to play after
Jimmy Eat World?! So we got thinking.
There are a lot of songs from our six
records that our fans like that we
haven’t played for a long time, so that’s
how it came together. It doesn’t feel
too heritage or nostalgic. It’s more of
a celebration of a band on their sixth
record. So come celebrate!”
