All That Jazz
LOOP is a Tom Hancocks-designed lamp for LA-based firm Atelier
de Troupe. It was inspired by the Californians’ existing ethos. “Atelier
de Troupe conceives modern antiques with timeless charm, diving
into the grammar of Bauhaus, of 60s Italian cinema or of French
decorative spirit,” they say. A desktop light, LOOP has a brass
instrument vibe, as if it had been hewn from a trumpet. “The design
process was smooth and stimulating, as I didn’t have to differ much
from the continued sculptural studies of my own work – basic
Euclidean point, line, and form relationships,” says New York-based
Hancocks. “But figuring out how to make sure it expressed the same
functionality and personality of the other pieces it would be presented
with... And most importantly, creating something I would want in
my own living space....” LOOP measures 32 by 32 by 45.5 cm, and
comes in two finishes: chrome plated or polished brass. The stated
retail price is US$1,375.00.

Vibrant Bathrooms
High-end bathrooms are often monochromatic spaces. Whites, blacks, anthracite, and
brushed stainless steel abound. British baths-and-basins brand Victoria + Albert has
decided an injection of colour is needed. The firm’s limestone sinks are now available
in a broad range of bright hues (freestanding bathtubs had already been made
available in sunny tones). Orange, red, yellow, blue, navy, pink, light and dark green
are among the new choices, which have the additional option of gloss or matt finishes.
Victoria + Albert baths and basins are made of QUARRYCAST, a trademarked material
created by blending volcanic limestone and high-performance resin, which results in
a product that is durable, lightweight, scratch- and stain-resistant, and easy to clean.
The basins are available in a number of styles, from traditional to modern, and sizes,
from 40 to 80 centimetres. “Give your bathroom a pop of colour, regardless of the
space you have available,” says Victoria + Albert. “Coloured basins will be instant
mood-lifters.”

Gli Azzurri
Running from 7 to 9 June was EDIT Napoli 2019, which describes itself as “an innovative design fair created to support, promote and celebrate a new generation of designers”. Among
the items on display was Ciclope Capri, a special edition of Ciclope, an upmarket, outdoor table football unit made by Italian manufacturer FAS Pendezza. The product is usually available
in white, black or red; the Capri version is in light blue, a reference to the Neapolitans’ love of the sea and their local football team SSC Napoli, which plays in sky-blue jerseys. The special
edition has also been given a wood trim and a wicker playing surface. Instead of having four legs, Ciclope is supported by a large cone-shaped central column. A surface top can be added,
turning the game into a drinks table. “The big metal cone, though it is unusual to see the support’s leg in this shape, it has a great stability during the more challenging phases of a game,”
says FAS Pendezza. “Adding an unexpected top it can be turned it into an elegant table for a nice aperitif outdoors.” It was designed for FAS by Italian studio Basaglia + Rota Nodari.
