The 44th edition of the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) will take place at the National Exhibition & Convention
Centre in Shanghai this September. Organised by China Trade Macalline Exhibition Co Ltd, a company founded by
the China Foreign Trade Guangzhou Exhibition General Corporation, the event is a biannual that alternates between
Guangzhou in spring and Shanghai in the autumn.

The cavernous spaces of the Shanghai venue will house different aspects of the fair. Hall 4.1 will be for
contemporary design; Hall 3 will serve under the banner of International and Lifestyle. “Numerous world-renowned
brands will present new innovations and trends and introduce collections to take advantage of the extraordinary
opportunity offered by CIFF to enter the prosperous Chinese market,” reads a CIFF press release. The North Hall will
be for lighting, with high-end house lamps for the Middle Kingdom’s ever-growing middle class taking centre stage.
Hall 6.1 will be divided between outdoor furniture, fabrics and home accessories; its designation being Outdoor
and Leisure, Homedecor and Hometextile. On the convention centre’s upper level will be Sleep Centre & Dining
Room (Hall 5.2), Sofa (6.2), and Fashion Office (8.2), which sounds slightly Orwellian, though with drapes and colour
schemes replacing rats and jackboots.

Among the fair’s guest speakers will be Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza. “[The 1992-Pritzker-prize winner] will
hold a discussion about his incredible career and will provide an insight into contemporary design as an acclaimed
architect,” says CIFF. Running concurrently will be the second edition of the Shanghai International Furniture
Machinery & Woodworking Machinery Fair (Halls 7.1 and 8.1), which was established in partnership with CIFF. CIFF
Shanghai will run from 8 to 11 September 2019.

Chair Choir
Band Collection is not a compilation album by Canadian rock-n-rollers
The Band. What it is is a two-piece furniture ensemble comprising a
dining chair and a club armchair. Designed by Spanish architect Patricia
Urquiola for compatriot manufacturer of outdoor furniture Kettal, the
seating duo has angular forms and can be made of either teak or
aluminium. “The idea behind the Band Collection is the breakdown of
structure,” says Kettal. “The chair’s design intentionally challenges the
classic sophisticated lines of furniture design and becomes something
schematic, a conceptual programme.” Kettal products are carried by
Hong Kong dealership Colourliving,
