and it is here that Steimle shows its flair. A new latticework of timber members
wraps the space, making a layered enclosure skin for the hall. The structure of
the big roof is in timber trusses, many carefully restored from the original, and
constituting a grand overhead canopy.

The section allows for visual connections between the three levels of the library
by means of open areas in the floorplate. The middle floor – the main hall – holds
magazine stacks, reading areas, and a media archive. It is on this level that the
