iabetes affects around 4.
million people in the UK and
occurs when you have too
much sugar (glucose) in your blood.
There are two main types:
Type 1, which affects around
8% of people with diabetes
and is where your body
can’t make the hormone
insulin, which our
bodies need to divert the
glucose to our cells for
fuel. And type 2, which
accounts for around 90%
is when your pancreas doesn’t
make enough insulin to deal with
the sugar effectively or that insulin
doesn’t work properly.

The symptoms
If your blood-sugar levels keep rising
they can cause symptoms such as:
✿Needing to wee a lot – as your

body tries to get rid
of the sugar through
your pancreas
✿Feeling tired – because
glucose isn’t getting to
your cells to give
you energy
✿Slow
healing of cuts
and grazes
✿Feeling thirsty
✿Having frequent
infections, such as thrush
✿High blood-sugar levels
which can damage your eyes,
heart, kidneys and feet over time.

The treatment
You can manage type 1 with insulin
injections or a pump and blood-sugar
level checks throughout the day.
For type 2, the effects of high blood
sugar can potentially be reversed by
healthier eating, increased activity and

3 ways to...
help allergies

1

Avoid having soft
furnishings. Choose
leather, plastic or
vinyl furniture instead
of upholstered. Opt
for wood or hard
vinyl floors instead
of carpets, and roller
blinds, which can
be wiped clean,
instead of curtains.

If you usually...
worry about wearing shorts

Try this instead...
wearing Capri pants
They’re shorter than leggings but
not as revealing as shorts. These
dhb Aeron Women’s Tech Run
(£40, wiggle.co.uk) are lightweight
and high wicking with mesh
behind the knee to keep you cool.
The black compression material
with tapering white design at
the back is flattering
and won’t ride up
your calves.

Clean smart.
Wipe surfaces
regularly with a damp
cloth and avoid
dry dusting. Clean
bedding, cushions,
soft toys and any
furnishings regularly,
by washing at a
high temperature
or vacuuming.

Invest in a Blue

and pet
