A WORTHY CONTENDER
DJI Osmo Action

For so long, a mighty Hero has
been dominating the handheld action
camera arena. That is until DJI, a
company renowned for its camera
drones, joined the rumble. Now, the
action cam competition heats up as
DJI’s new Osmo Action proves to
be a worthy contender with its solid
features and fancy tricks to boot.

Design-wise, the Osmo Action
doesn’t bring anything new to the
boxy, compact form factor we’ve
seen in many action cameras that
came before it—well, except for the
two screens. This tiny camera is also
waterproof out of the box, and can
go and record 36 feet underwater
without a sealed housing for up to
30-minute intervals.

The DJI Osmo Action sports a bright
2.25-inch LCD with a true 16:9 aspect
ratio and 640 x 360 resolution on its
rear. As a bonus, there’s also a tiny but
full-colored 320 x 320 1.4-inch screen
in front so you can easily track where
you are in the frame if you are taking self
videos. To switch between these two
displays, simply double tap the rear LCD
using two fingers or long press the Quick
Switch button.

At the heart of the Osmo Action is a
powerful 1/2.3” CMOS sensor and a
wide f/2.8 lens that records up to 12MP
stills in RAW or JPG format. This camera
can shoot 4K HDR videos at 60fps as well
as slow-motion footage at up to 1080p.
It also has High Dynamic Range (HDR)
support and a maximum ISO of 3200.
Of course, DJI’s reliable RockSteady
Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)
feature is also available on the Osmo
Action to keep your footage smooth and
clear even when on the move.

But that’s not all; the DJI Osmo Action
still has a few tricks up it sleeves. One,
it has timelapse and hyperlapse modes.
Another feature is the Portrait mode,
which allows you to rotate the camera
90-degrees and take portrait photos.
Meanwhile, the Dewarp mode removes
bending on wide-angle shots and the
Custom mode allows for quick access of
your favorite settings.

Powered by a removable LiPo battery,
this DJI action camera comes equipped
with dual microphones and dual speakers
so you don’t just get great images, but
outstanding audio as well. The Osmo
Action supports microSD card up to 256GB
with a minimum of 30Mb/s write speed.
It also connects with the DJI Mimo app
on your Android or iOS smartphone via
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
