For nearly 50 years, University of Waikato researchers have
worked to restore our terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and
marine ecosystems to their past glory. The reputation we’ve
built and funding we’ve attracted has enabled us to assemble
multidisciplinary teams whose singular focus is restoring our
environment. The impacts of this work are numerous, including
restoring 60 hectares of farmland within Hamilton
at Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park.

Our research is informing council and community efforts,
returning ecosystems to their original character and protecting
Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique native plants and animals. This
research, along with many other projects, has contributed to our
growing international reputation. In the 2020 QS World University
Rankings we are ranked 266 = out of 1000 institutions worldwide,
climbing 135 places since 2014.

The University of Waikato is ranked 72nd globally for citations
per faculty member, highlighting the relevance and impact of
our research on the global stage.

from what was then called a
building inspector, some of
whom were very good. This
was called co-operation.
Since the advent of building
consent officers, who can only
view and approve or other-
wise, we’ve moved to a more
confrontational process.
Challenging their decisions
can get an aggressive response.
Professional engineers,
architects and designers, all
personally liable to one extent
or another, are often defeated
by the luddite approach of
council staff secure in the
knowledge that they cannot be
held to account.
