AFTER A POLARIZING FIRST collection at Celine, Hedi Slimane has found his footing—complete with
shearling-lined over-the-knee burgundy boots. From the ashes of last season’s party girl emerged a woman
reminiscent of not only the empowered Parisienne Phoebe Philo championed during her 10-year tenure
but also the house’s original designer, namesake Céline Vipiana. Here, declared Slimane via the ’70s-inspired
fall/winter 2019 collection—with its loose-knit-sweater and culotte combos in warm neutrals, belted
snake-print dresses and tailored toppers—is the future of luxury dressing: bougie but unpretentious,
wearable but never boring or predictable. There was texture overload, from corduroy to faux fur and, yes,
still leather and sparkle, bien sûr, but it was decidedly grown-up, a mood that seemed to proliferate
across the RTW runways. Being all business has never looked so good.
