1) We put Toronto hairstylist JANET
JACKSON to work on the set of our cover
shoot (“First Place” page 94) in Little
Jamaica, on Eglinton Avenue West, not far
from where she grew up. “Ironically, I first
knew I wanted to be a hairstylist while working
on Eglinton Avenue,” she says. “It was at
Amorphous Hair Salon that I developed a
love and passion for the trade and became
obsessed with the artistry.”

2) Consider this our formal apology to new
creative director extraordinaire ANNIE
HORTH if we distracted her on-set. Crowned
stylist of the year at the 2016 Canadian Arts
& Fashion Awards, Horth has worked with
celebs like superstar Céline Dion, so we had
questions, naturally. What is the Montrealer’s
wardrobe staple? “Blazers are a year-round
favourite piece of mine—they look chic paired
with anything,” she says. “My go-to tip:
If you love it, buy it.”

3) When in France, one must partake in a
super-casual hangout in Versailles. Editor-in-
chief VANESSA CRAFT, publisher SOPHIE
BANFORD and ELLE Québec editor-in-chief
JOANIE PIETRACUPA stopped to enjoy the
sights of the National Equestrian Academy
at the Palace’s stables. The group attended
the ELLE International Conference, where
they got to talk magazines, eat croissants
and plan world domination.

4) Montreal writer CAITLIN STALL-
PAQUET is in it to win it, and she doesn’t care
who knows. “Would a man feel bad about his
competitiveness?” she asks. “Being ladylike
is so ‘2000 and late,’ and if someone makes
you feel bad about it, they’re probably
jealous.” For her story on when competition
works in a relationship and when it doesn’t,
head to page 86.

5) Edmonton native MEGHAN
COLLISON took a break from the runways
to go retro in our ’70s shoot, “Goodbye Girl”
(page 110). And the model had no problem
channelling the decade’s vibes on-set. “There
are so many ’70s things I love,” she says.
“Definitely the music. I also love the makeup
of the era. The blue eyeshadow and heavy
mascara were everything!”
