WHEN SINGLE-INGREDIENT skincare products (think names that include “hyaluronic
acid” or “vitamin C” rather than catch-alls like “moisturizer”) first hit the shelves en
masse, allowing consumers the chance to build a customized routine from scratch,
it seemed like a lot of effort. But today they are commonplace in our bathroom cabi-
nets. And now the custom routine is coming for hair too, with skincare staples like pre-
cleanse balms and exfoliating scrubs making their way into the hair-care aisle. “Building
a [custom] hair-care regimen can feel luxurious and almost bespoke,” says Toronto-based
hairstylist Anna Giannini, but the need for a personalized routine is anything but frivo-
lous—shampoo and conditioner are simply not enough to meet the varied requirements of
different hair types. And rather than adding to washing and styling time, the multi-tasking
nature of these products can actually cut it down. For those who use styling tools on the
regular (which can leave hair dry and dull), pre-shampoo treatments “aid in detangling pri-
or to shampooing as [they] fill in any porous areas of the hair,” says Giannini. Overnight
serums promise softer, more moisturized hair by morning and no residue on your pillow.
Add in sheet masks and precision sunscreen powders and hair care is well on its way to
