ast your mind back to those schoolyard
years, and chances are you can remember the
sting of a bully’s actions or words. I recall it
distinctly. My so-called bestie, Lucy, decided one
day she wasn’t my friend anymore and convinced
others to follow in her traitorous footsteps. For
days, I’d chase them in the lunch break like a
desperate puppy – but every time I approached,
they collectively bolted. I was nine. A week later,
all was forgiven and life returned to normal – yet
I never forgot, and still vividly recall the pang of
rejection. But I was lucky; aside from those days,
I wasn’t a victim of bullying like millions
of kids who end up with profound emotional
scars. Studies show that children who are
relentlessly teased are five times more likely to
suffer from anxiety or depression in adult life,
10 times more likely to develop suicidal thoughts,
and 15 times more prone to panic attacks. This
month, writer Carla Caruso delves deep into her
past to reveal the nonstop bullying that
overshadowed her childhood. As an Australian
of Italian descent in an all-Anglo school, the
name-calling was constant: “wog”, “moustache”
and “Aboriginal Cher” were just a few pearlers. In
her story on page 60, Carla bravely decides to lay
her old ghosts to rest by confronting her pre-teen
tormentors. I won’t reveal what happens next – it’s
a fascinating read – but the message is clear: bullies
need to be identified and stopped immediately, or
their victims will suffer for decades.
