Growing up in a household of domestic
violence, mental illness and financial
hardship, Christina Chun’s safe space
was high school. It was in the
classroom that she could take back
control and forge her own future.
Or so she thought. “It wasn’t until
work experience week that I realised
all of my peers had these industry
connections, and my family knew
no-one. Then we started looking at the
big universities and I discovered that,
despite my ATAR, I wouldn’t be able
to cover the cost of transport, let alone
the textbooks,” Chun, now 28, recalls.
It was Chun’s frustration with the
injustice that her low socioeconomic
status brought that pushed her to
look online for answers. There she
uncovered a plethora of free
information, including a university
scholarship that saw her through
her degree at the University of NSW.
“It was this experience that led me
to create 1Scope, an online platform
aimed at levelling the playing field
for students,” explains Chun. Since
launching in 2017, 1Scope has given
15,000 students skill-building
opportunities in the form of
workshops, conferences, work
experience and scholarships.
It’s no surprise she took out
the Bumble Making Moves Award –
the only reader-voted prize handed out
to a woman who is creating positive
change in her community. Chun, who
is also a working mother, accepted
the award on stage with her young
daughter Harriet on her hip.
Generational change in action.
