Indian Architect & Builder – July 2019

(ff) #1

The design brief for Temenos contended with these issues – of
privacy for the individual, and visibility for the organization – while
keeping in mind the need for optimizing floorspace to maintain
profitability. Temenos is a Greek word that translates to a sanctuary
or a sacred precinct; the building was hence conceptualized as an
urban interface between the public and the private – a structure that
stands out amongst its surroundings, and allows its occupants to
disconnect when need be. Temenos has been designed to become a
‘jewel’ in the city skyline – with a distinct, monolithic appearance
that differentiates it from the typical glass-box commercial complex
covered in advertising banners. Taking inspiration from origami folds,

the built envelope of Temenos is characterized by a tessellated ‘skin’
of perforated aluminium panels, rendered in a rich champagne colour.

The building is oriented towards north, and is five storeys high. Of
these, the lowermost level is a stilt floor, accommodating site services
and parking. The first floor has been earmarked for retail, whereas the
top three floors consist of office spaces. All services and circulation
cores have been relegated to the back of the complex, facing south.
The typical floor-plate has been kept free of internal partitions, to
allow for spatial flexibility. A circular staircase connects the office
floors, designed as a sculptural insert made of metal.
