A couple of weeks ago, an email
popped into my inbox late one night
from an address I didn’t recognise.
Upon opening it, it transpired that it
had come from the family of one Ray
Burton – father of late ‘Tallica bassist
Cliff – telling us that he would be in
London for Metallica’s Twickenham Stadium show,
and asking if it would be okay if Ray could come to
our ‘Hardwired... And Early Dayz’ exhibition at the
House Of Vans London during his trip. Of course, we
were delighted to oblige, and while the K! team was
diligently getting this week’s issue off to print, I was
privileged enough to spend the morning with Ray,
guiding him around the exhibition and showing him
old photos from the K! archive which feature his son.
This Kerrang! Awards week, which you can relive
through the pages of this issue, has been one of
amazing memories. But hearing Ray tell old stories of
Cliff and his then-fledgling bandmates will stay with
me for a very, very long time.
Enjoy the issue, and see you next week!
