Kerrang! – June 28, 2019

(backadmin) #1
THE AWARDS

What would your younger selves
have said if they knew they would
one day win a Kerrang! Award?
LEE KIERNAN (GUITAR):“I genuinely
couldn’t have imagined it. What’s so
great about this is that this is a realm
of music that we never thought we’d
ever be a part of. We never would
have thought Kerrang! or its readership
would ever be interested in us or
what we do, so the fact that this has
happened means there’s a whole other
audience we can talk to, share our music
with, and share our message with. That’s
been an amazing thing to discover. It’s a
shame the others couldn’t be here, too,
but they’re looking after their newborn
children with their families. I’m taking
the award as it’s my birthday.”

What does the strength of this award
category tell you about the state of
British rock?
ADAM DEVONSHIRE (BASS): “That
it’s really fucking strong. It’s absolutely
great to win, but you’ve got to
acknowledge the brilliance of the other
bands in our category, because it was
pretty fierce competition. We’re good
friends with YONAKA who are a great
band we’ve met along the way. I tell you
who I hadn’t heard before, though –
Scarlxrd. That sounds really fucking sick
so we’ll definitely be checking him out
as soon as possible.”

Yours is music with a message. How
does it feel to know that message is
reaching people?
ADAM: “It feels really special. We think
it’s important to focus on love, because
everything we do is about love. We
honestly couldn’t have gotten this far
if we didn’t fucking love what we do.
There’s so much negativity out there in
the world, which really fucked us off, so
we wanted to make a big, noisy stand
against that. The fact that there are lots
of people out there who feel the same
way as us and they have embraced what
we’ve done is really special.”
