So you’ve won two Kerrang! Awards in
between your two massive UK stadium
shows. Not a bad week, then?
LARS ULRICH (DRUMS):“It’s been a magical
night and a magical week. Coming to the UK
is always special to me, not only because of
our own history here, but also the musical
pedigree that helped make Metallica
Metallica. Plus, Kerrang! and all the stories
that have been published about us over the
years are certainly embedded here in my
thick Danish skull. It’s so cool that 240 years
later we’re still being acknowledged and
appreciated, but the best years are still in
front of us because we’re just getting started.
Just in case you were wondering.”
Thin Lizzy’s Scott Gorham and Queen’s
Roger Taylor presented your awards. How
does it feel to be recognised by people you
look up to?
“I can talk about Metallica and numbers
all day long, but before any of that stuff
happened I was a huge admirer of these guys.
For example, when Thin Lizzy came to town
in the late ‘70s, I remember spending four
hours camped outside the Plaza Hotel, which
is near the main train station in Copenhagen,
just waiting to catch a glimpse of them. To be
around these legends is still amazing to me,
and that will never change. I will always be like
a 12-year-old fan around those guys.”
As a lifelong Motörhead fan, it must have
been a big deal to witness them receiving
the Inspiration Award?
“Absolutely! I was a member of the
Motörheadbangers fan club. Everyone who’s
a fan of Metallica knows that Motörhead and
Diamond Head were the primary sources of
inspiration for us. Motörhead’s legacy and
power will last forever.”
