t
true design evolution so good it could
cross frontiers?
The new 1761 is available in 18"
and 20" (457 or 515mm) barrel
formats with either the standard HD-B
stock or a thumbhole design. They are
both priced above most of their
sporting rifle competition, often double
the cost, but if you want to own a really
special rifle that is not so much a tool
for a job as an ownership delight
in its own right, this is the
direction to look in.
It’s fair to say that a
walnut stock is not going
to stand up to the physical
and atmospheric rigours
of a hunting lifestyle in the
same way a polymer or even
laminate stock will, but classical good
looks have combined well here with
hi-tech mechanics.
The critical aspect of the 1761’s
action design is the triple-lug bolt,
locking in position with complete
symmetrical balance where many
competitors show two asymmetric or
even single lug locking. Yes, the action
takes less pressure than a centrefire

it’s hard not to notice the
extremely advanced and

three-position or biathlon, the
innovation and mechanical
masterpieces exhibited are, frankly, an
engineer’s delight.

In the automotive world, motorsport
improves the breed, but in the shooting
world, it takes time for innovation to
filter through to production.
Although thoroughly effective,
most rimfires are decades old in
terms of their designs. The only maker
who seems to reside in both radical
competition and traditional hunting
markets is Anschütz. So it was
with great trepidation I was to review
