> While the design of 2013’s Mac Pro
was radical, heat dissipation was an
issue. The 2019 Mac Pro rethinks
the whole device, retaining striking
looks in a more traditional form
factor. Its ‘cheese grater’ exterior
is a throwback to 2003’s Power
Mac G5, while the milled aluminium
and stainless steel handles are
trademark Ive flourishes.

>Walking around Steve Jobs’ garden
not long after the iMac G3 stunned the
world, Jony Ive suddenly got an idea.
What if the follow-up to the G3 had a
flat-panel display that was separated
from the base? What if the screen could
move freely at the touch of a finger?
Inspired by the sunflowers he saw
around him, Ive designed a computer
that fused high tech with natural design.

>Before the iPhone,
smartphones were clunky,
sluggish devices, with giant
keyboards and tiny screens.
The iPhone changed all that,
turning the whole smartphone
industry on its head with the
introduction of Multi-Touch
gestures – even Google had
to ditch its smartphone plans
and start again when it saw
the iPhone. The iPhone is
still frequently copied today
(look at the notch), but it was
the original that really forced
Apple’s rivals to take notice.

> iOS 7 was the first version of
iOS to really break free from
Steve Jobs’ obsession with
skeuomorphism. With an
emphasis on flat, simple design,
it was Jony Ive all over. Gone
were the faux leather stitching
and glossy glass effects; in were
subtle gradients and limited
colour palettes. Ive liked to refer
to its “profound and enduring
beauty in simplicity”.
