TREASURES & MUST-SEES
Everyone has favourite sights to
show visitors to Kingston. Not
all attractions are obvious,
though. Try some of these out-
of-the-ordinary excursions.

Take a trip to see the murals in
the village of Athens.

Drive up Fort Henry Hilland
point out significant landmarks
(spires, domes, parks, buildings)
to your visitors as you look out
over Kingston.

Drive along the picturesque
Thousand Islands Parkway
between Gananoque and
Brockville, stopping for photo
opportunities or a picnic along
the way.

Visit Chaffey’s Locksand the
Opinicon Lodge.

Drive up to Jones Fallsto
wonder at the dam there, built
by Colonel By as part of the
Rideau Canal system.

Go to Kingston Mills Locksfor a
wander around the grounds and
to look at the blockhouse and
plaques there.

Ride the Wolfe Island ferry to
Wolfe Island, where you can
take a scenic drive or bike ride
around the island; or take the
Simcoe Island ferry; or even
make it a day trip to the States,
crossing the St. Lawrence on the
other side of Wolfe Island via
the Cape Vincent ferry.

For the ferry aficionado, there
are a couple of other boat rides
you can take in this area, going
to Howe Island and Amherst
Island.

Take the Loyalist Parkway to the
Tyendinaga Reserve for a look
at the Mohawk Royal Chapel.

Continue on the Loyalist
Parkway to the Glenora ferry.
Then ride the ferry and take in
the sights on the other side,
including Lake on the
Mountain, Picton, Cherry Valley
and Sandbanks Provincial Park.

For a good look at some
stunning limestone architecture,
wander on foot around Queen’s
University campus, particularly
along University Avenue and
Union Street.

Whatever you do, don’t miss
the farmers’ market behind
City Hallon Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays; or
visit the flea/antiques market
on Sundays.

The Kingston Memorial Centre Farmers’ Market, held Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., was founded in 2012 by five
farmers wanting to increase access to local food. The market is a busy spot, with live music, arts activities, yoga
class at 10 a.m. and tai chi classes at 11:15 a.m.
Enjoy special events such as the Zucchini 500 Races on July 21,
an off-the-wall competition for all ages. Minotaur Games & Gifts hosts
a car-making party on July 20 from 1 to 4 p.m., or you can make your
car at the market on Sunday morning; races begin at 11 a.m. sharp.
On August 11, head to the market for the annual BBQ Corn Roast, a
har vest celebration with games, prizes, corn on the cob and free
watermelon slices. The Burger Bash on September 8 features burgers
and salads made with ingredients provided by market vendors for $10,
as well as live music and kids’ activities. At the Mini-Oktoberfest on
October 6, enjoy delicious food provided by vendors for $10, a mini-beer garden, live music and kids’ activities.
