r. Sharif Tabbah re-
ceived an unusual invi-
tation this summer: a
very rich man, cele-
brating his birthday,
offered to fly him to Paris. But this
was not going to be a typical vaca-
tion. There would be no sipping Pi-
not Noir and noshing on baguettes
in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
Tabbah, a physical therapist
who trains elite athletes, couldn’t
accept the invitation from Antonio
Brown, the star NFL receiver who
is about to begin a new chapter of
his career with the Oakland Raid-
ers. But Brown barely blinked. He
went on Twitter and found an Irish
rugby player to work out with in
Paris instead.
After that, Brown stopped by
Paris Saint-Germain, the French
soccer powerhouse. Just before
that, on a trip to Hawaii, Brown
crashed high-school football prac-
tices, cranked up their ball-pitch-
ing machine and caught high-speed
passes from mere feet away. Back
in Florida, he messaged strangers
who he thought would give him
the best possible workouts.
So it went on Brown’s very
strange off-season fitness tour: one
of the NFL’s best wide receivers
worked out with a seemingly ran-
dom collection of individuals—of-
ten involving unusual, seemingly
wacky exercise drills.
Coming off a disappointing 4-
year, the Raiders acquired Brown
from the Steelers this off-season
with plans to make him the linch-
pin for coach Jon Gruden’s attempt
to revitalize a moribund offense in
his second season. The Raiders
gave Brown a fat new deal to solid-
ify his future with the team after
he demanded a trade from Pitts-
burgh.
Brown, the NFL’s most produc-
tive receiver in recent years, set
off to prepare unlike anybody else
in football. Although Brown briefly
began camp on the injured list,
fans don’t have to worry about his
fitness: Brown spent his summer
traipsing around the globe, work-
ing out relentlessly with a series of
quirky, astonishing and eye-pop-
ping workouts.
“He has one speed: full,” Tabbah
said. “And it’s all day.”
Tabbah had worked with Brown
years ago, and when they got back
together this off-season, Tabbah
had a problem: his workouts, de-
signed for superstar athletes, just
weren’t cutting it. “That’s not hard
enough,” he thought.
They devised a series of work-
outs for Brown that went viral. In
one, he did plank exercises on a
ball while catching balls with his
hands. In another, Brown stood on
a Bosu ball, a balancing device, on
one foot with special glasses that
flicker light to block his vision,
with resistance devices to simulate
defenders, all while he caught a
ball over and over. In a different

drill, Brown stepped up and down
on the Bosu ball rapidly as he
caught rapid fire tennis balls.
Alex Whitehair, another trainer,
also had to get creative when
Brown came calling. Whitehair was
minding his own business one day
when he decided to check his mes-
sages on Instagram. He saw a mes-
sage from somebody he had never
come into contact before but ap-
peared to be quite famous. White-
hair doesn’t usually rub elbows
with celebrities back home in up-
state New York—he’s more of a
hockey guy, anyway—so he had to
do a double-take. “What’s going on
here?” he wondered. “I went to his
page, and I was like this is incredi-
ble.”
Brown liked what he saw on
Whitehair’s page, and next thing
Whitehair knew he was being
flown down to Florida to put
Brown through another grueling
set of exercises. The most aston-

help publicly.
“Looking for a training spot in
Paris send me info to train hard
today,” he tweeted on July 8. Help
was soon on the way in the form
of a muscular guy who plays a dif-
ferent sport featuring an oblong-
shaped ball. Simon Zebo, an Irish
rugby union player who competes
for the club Racing 92 in France,
hastily replied with an invitation.
“I got you one on one,” Zebo
wrote, with the crying laughing
emoji.
This, however, was no laughing
matter. Brown and Zebo together
went through footwork drills. At
night, Brown ran routes and
caught passes. (The rugby ball ap-
peared to be an adequate replace-
ment for an actual football.) Brown
left with a jersey signed by Zebo.
That was followed by a visit to
PSG, the French soccer champions.
In between, Brown celebrated his
31st birthday.
And this wasn’t the only time
Brown traveled far distances just
to exercise with complete strang-
ers in a place where normal people
might vacation. He also went to
Hawaii where a bunch of unsus-
pecting high-schoolers became his
temporary teammates.
The Maui High School Sabers
are pretty good at football. They’re
back-to-back league champions,
and they were able to get some ex-
tra work in with a special guest as
they try to prepare for a third.
“Oh my God,” one of the players
said as they saw him.
Brown spent a few days there
training with the Sabers. He
caught passes from the team’s
quarterbacks, who weren’t used to
throwing to someone so fast. He
was guarded by the team’s defen-
sive backs, who weren’t used to
covering someone so fast. “They
weren’t afraid to look silly,” said
Donald Mahoe, one of the team’s
coaches.
“Maui High School is now family
to me,” Brown said, according to
The Maui News.
The Sabers were most amazed
when he was working out com-
pletely by himself. At one point, he
turned a Jugs machine, a device
that launches balls, up to its fast-
est setting and started catching
them from 10 yards away. Then, he
inched his way toward the ma-
chine until he was only a few feet
away—still catching the balls over
and over again.
This routine went on for a few
days, in the afternoon and eve-
nings, until it got dark out. (Brown
said he chose Maui because it’s
one of his wife’s favorite places,
and that he also snuck in time for
snorkeling and scooter riding.)
But one night, Brown didn’t
want to stop working. This was
problematic: nobody could seem to
see a thing. That’s when the Sa-
bers pulled a fleet of golf carts
next to the field. “They turned on
the headlights,” Mahoe said.
Brown’s workout resumed.

Wherever Antonio Brown went this off-season—from Paris to Hawaii—he didn’t stop his fitness routine

“The opportunity to coach this
team and work with these amazing
women has been the honor of a
lifetime,” Ellis said in a statement
Tuesday on U.S. Soccer’s website.
“I want to thank and praise them
for their commitment and passion
to not only win championships but
also raise the profile of this sport
globally while being an inspiration
to those who will follow them.”
Ellis, 52 years old, earlier this
month became the first women’s
coach to win consecutive World
Cup titles. Her departure isn’t un-
expected—national-team coaches
tend stay on for four or five
years—but some observers won-
dered whether would stay on
through the 2020 Olympics.
Ellis said Tuesday that when
she accepted the head coaching
job, “this was the time frame I en-
visioned. The timing is right to
move on and the program is posi-
tioned to remain at the pinnacle of
women’s soccer.”
Ellis will continue with U.S. Soc-
cer for at least the next year as an
ambassador, a role that will in-
clude representing the federation
at events. U.S. Soccer recently cre-
ated the position of general man-
ager of the women’s national team.
That hire is “imminent,” and the
coaching search will follow it, ac-
cording to U.S. Soccer.
The news of Ellis stepping down
wasfirstreportedbysoccerweb-
site The Equalizer. The U.S.
women’s victory tour starts Satur-
day against Ireland at the Rose
Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Ellis has been head coach of the
national team since 2014 after pre-
viously serving as an interim. She
led the U.S. to the 2015 World Cup
title a year after becoming perma-
nent head coach. Then she rebuilt
the team after its quarterfinal loss
in the 2016 Olympics. The U.S. won
the 2019 World Cup on July 7.
Current federation president
Carlos Cordeiro said Tuesday that
Ellis was “not afraid to make
tough decisions while giving her
players the freedom to play to
their strengths.”
