Manager Joe Maddonsaid the
Chicago Cubs signed catcher Jon-
athan Lucroy.
Lucroy, 33, was released by the
Angels on Wednesday. The 10-year-
veteran and two-time All-Star is
expected to join the Cubs in Cin-
cinnati on Thursday.
Lucroy will pair with Victor
Caratinibehind the plate for Chi-
cago to help plug a gap created
when All-Star Willson Contreras
suffered a hamstring strain Sat-
urday.
Contreras is expected to sit out
four weeks.
Lucroy, who batted .242 with
seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 74
games with the Angels, returned
last week after suffering a concus-
sion and a broken nose in a plate
collision with Houston’s Jake
Marisnickon July 7. He sat out 18
games.

Etc.

Greg Holland, a three-time All-
Star who led the National League
in saves in 2017 with 41, was desig-
nated for assignment by the Arizo-
na Diamondbacks. He is 1-2 with a
4.54 earned run average in 40
games. ... Miami Marlins shortstop
Miguel Rojaswas placed on the 10-
day injured list because of a
strained hamstring. He is hitting
.289. ... Boston Red Sox second
baseman Dustin Pedroia, 35, had
another surgery on his trouble-
some left knee. The four-time All-
Star played only six games this
season, all in April, and three last
season. ... The Red Sox and Balti-
more Orioles will meet next year in
the fourth MLB Little League
Classic in Williamsport, Pa. The
matchup, a home game for the Ori-
oles, is set for Aug. 23.
