The EOS R5: what we know so far
e cutives

behind this, as there is currently no means
to broadcast 8K video?
Canon Actually, in Japan, partially, there are
already some 8K broadcasts, but obviously
there is some catching up to do globally. This
technology is defi nitely the future, though. For
people to enjoy 8K broadcast content, there
has to be a device which can record video so
we want to be prepared for things to come.
Also, the very high resolution of 8K enables
you to extract high-resolution stills.

AP Canon has announced a couple of new
lenses, the RF 24-105 f/4.5-7.1 kit zoom
and development of the 100-500mm RF
lens f/4.5-7.1. SLR users are used to lenses
at 5.6 smallest aperture, so what is the
thinking behind f/7.1 at the telephoto end?
Canon We have dual pixel CMOS AF as you
know in the EOS R, and we are not limited by
f-numbers when it comes to AF features. Also
the ISO performance has shot up, allowing
images to have high resolution so we are able
to enjoy images with less noise. So we thought
with the RF 24-105 f/4.5-7.1 kit zoom and
development of the 100-500mm f/4.5-7.
RF lens, we could choose f/7.1 but still maintain
the small size as well as a longer focal length.
We’re looking forward to getting customer
feedback and feed this into further
development.

AP The EOS-1D X Mark III is a high-end
sports DSLR with 5.5K video. Why are you
offering 5.5K on a DSLR and 8K on
mirrorless?
Canon EOS-1D X Mark III users are always
looking for high-performance video and can
also benefi t from continuous shooting at 16fps
via the optical viewfi nder and up to 20fps in
live view. As this camera uses a 20MP sensor,
the video performance would be 5.5K. With
the R5 we wanted to include 8K video, and
that is why the sensor size comes out about
33 million. So it comes down to the optimised
pixel layout for the different cameras.

AP The EOS 850D replaces and ‘unifi es’ the
EOS 77D and EOS 800D. Do you
regret trying to market two separate but
similar cameras?
Canon Specifi cation wise, the EOS 77D and
800D are indeed similar – but when we
released these two models we had different
target markets. With the EOS 800D we were
looking at smartphone camera users who were
eager to enjoy a bit more of the world of
photography. The EOS 77D was aimed at
people who already own an entry-level SLR or
compact and want to go to the next level. In
terms of sales we were able to achieve the
level we were hoping for. Also different regions
around the world have different demands and

FULL details, release date and price are
yet to be confi rmed, but Canon has
confi rmed this high-end mirrorless model
will feature in-body stabilisation, dual card
slots, and continuous shooting at 20fps
using the electronic shutter, or 12fps
mechanically. It will also support advanced
animal AF for dogs, cats and birds,
recognising their eyes, face and body. In
addition, the EOS R5 will be capable of
internal 8K video recording at 30fps using
the full sensor width, with Dual Pixel
CMOS AF. This implies a sensor of at least
40MP, assuming a 3:2 aspect ratio. Canon’s Go Tokura (left) shows off the new camera

some markets still very much want entry-level
DSLRs. We can now meet the growing demand
for mirrorless cameras, as well as satisfy the
needs of DSLR fans.

AP Can you give us any idea of what the
new EOS R lenses are likely to be? Will they
be focused more towards the high-end R5,
or the entry-level RP?
Canon With RF lenses, there are three key
features – wide open aperture, short back
focus and fast communication between the
lens and the body. We still just have the ten RF
lenses out there at the moment, but there is
great potential to expand and grow and
develop. Our aim is to offer more lenses with a
smaller size and lower price.

AP How has coronavirus affected your
business and supply chains?
Canon As we have manufacturing facilities in
other parts of Asia, including China, there will
be some effect, but we are still assessing the
full impact. There are a lot of negative forces
out there at the moment but there are lots of
things we can do and we are always looking to
develop and progress.
