Bradley used strong-arm
tactics on KC’s Hamilton
ByNickKelly
GLOBECORRESPONDENT
Billy Hamiltonknew he was
pushing his luck,especially with
Jackie Bradley Jr. in centerfield.
Hamiltongritted his teeth as if
pressinghis upperand lower
pearlywhitestogether couldmake
him run faster. He didn’t have to
look to knowthe ball was coming.
Hamilton’s decision to tag up
and try to advanceto thirdpitted
one of the fastest base runners
against one of baseball’s best
arms.
And Hamiltonpaid for it. Brad-
ley’s throwfromcenterfield beat a
divingHamiltonto thirdfor a dou-
ble play.
It was onlythe secondout of
the inning, but it haltedthe mo-
mentumthe Royalshad builtafter
taking a 2-0 lead in the third.
Bradley’s throwserved as a turn-
ing pointin the game,allowing
the Red Sox to jump into a game
they felt was slowly slipping away.
Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez
was struggling. Throughfour in-
nings,he gave up six hits,two
earned runs, walked three and
struck out one. His changeup, typ-
icallyhis best pitch,served as the
catalyst for muchof the Royals’
success,whether via hits or walks.
Hamilton’s hit in the beginning
of the fourth was one of thosesix
hits the Royals had against Rodri-
guez.Hamilton,it initially
seemed,coulddo no wrongon the
base paths in the fourth.
First base umpire Mark Carl-
son had ruled Hamilton out at
first, but the call was overturned
when the Royals challenged it. So
Hamilton remained aboard.
Shortly thereafter, Hamilton stole
second.
But Hamiltontooka gamble,
trying to reachthirdbase.
Hamilton is anything but slow.
In fact, he’s one of the fastest base
runners in the majors. According
to Statcast, his sprintspeedof 29.5
feet per second ranks 15th among
all players this season.
But he was facingone of the
best armsin baseball.
Bradley had tallied nineout-
field assists this season,which
placed him tied for third among
all MLBoutfielders. Leury Garcia
cameinto the nightleadingthe
majorswith 12.
Hamiltontoppedout at 29.3
miles per hourwhenhe tagged up
and sprintedto thirdbase,which
is not his fastest. But he reached
that top-endspeedfroma stand-
ing start after WhitMerrifieldflied
out to center.
Still,it was not fast enoughto
beat Bradley, who threw a perfect
strike to thirdbasemanRafaelDe-
vers to doubleup Hamilton.
Bradley receivedacknowledg-
ment from Rodriguez, who point-
ed in gratitudeto his center fielder
fromnear thirdbase.
Rodriguezsettled in from
there, pitching one more inning
and allowing only one morehit.
The Sox offensealso builton this
decisiveplay fromBradley in the
next half-inning.
Designated hitter J.D. Martinez
smacked a two-run homer to deep
left center to tie the game,2-2. The
Red Sox extendedthe lead to 4-2
in the fifth.
Of course, the Royals later tied
the gameto force eventual extra
innings. But without Bradley’s
throw, the Sox may have been the
ones playingcatch up the entire
game.
Hamiltonlearneda valuable
lesson: It’s best not to challenge
Bradley’s cannonof an arm.
JIM DAVIS/GLOBESTAFF
BillyHamilton, oneof thefastest playersin baseball, testedJackie Bradley Jr.’s armin thefourth
inning butwas taggedoutat third base by Rafael Devers aftertryingto advance ona flyball.
