Ryan Murphy is knownfor his baroque,
boundary-pushing approach to storytelling. At
their best, the star showrunner’s series —
among them: “Glee,” “Nip/Tuck,” “American
Horror Story,” “Feud” and “Pose” – have made a
spectacle of shaking up the TV landscape, often
throughsheer virtue of whose storiesthey
choose to tell.
From “Pose,” which foregroundsfive trans
women of color in its exploration of ’80s New
York ball culture,to HBO film “The Normal
Heart,” aboutgay activists strugglingagainst
the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis, Murphy’s re-
peatedlychosen to stand with societal under-
dogs.
So when FX announced this week that Mur-
phy is centering the next cycle of his “American
Crime Story” franchise around the Bill Clinton-
MonicaLewinsky scandal— whichrocked
Clinton’s presidency and defined decades of
Lewinsky’s life — the question became:Whose
story, exactly, will he be telling?
Accordingto FX chief John Landgraf, the
serieswill “explorethe overlooked dimensions
of the women who found themselves caught up
in the scandal and political war that cast a long
shadow over the Clinton presidency.”
One invaluable ally to that cause: Lewinsky
herself, who told Vanity Fair she agreed to pro-
duce“Impeachment: AmericanCrimeStory”
after meeting with Murphy and sensing his
dedication to “giving a voiceto the marginal-
ized” in his shows. “People have been co-opting

and tellingmy part in this story for decades,” Lewinsky told the publication.Now, it’s her turn. Beanie Feldstein (“Booksmart”) will play Lewinsky, with Sarah Paulsonon board as Lin- da Tripp and AnnaleighAshfordportraying Paula Jones. BothPaulsonand Ashfordare “AmericanCrimeStory” vets; Paulsonwon an Emmy for playing prosecutor Marcia Clark in season 1, “The People v. OJ Simpson,” while Ashfordhad a standoutarc in last year’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” No word yet on whowill play the Clintonsor, indeed, whether they’ll appear. “Impeachment,” as its title might suggest, is aftersomethingmorechargedthanhistorical reenactment. “Powerful people, often men, take advantage of those subordinate to themin myriad ways all the time,” Lewinsky added in her comments to Vanity Fair. “Many people will see this as such a story and for that reason, this narrative is one that is, regretfully, ever- green.” Adding to its timeliness,Murphy’s series will premiere on Sept. 27, 2020 — right as the next presidential race, between a currently un- decided Democratic challenger and President Trump (embroiled in his own, ongoing conver- sations around impeachment and alleged sexu- al misconduct) will enter its finalweeks.To Murphy’s fans,that part shouldn’t comeas a surprise— no one’s ever accusedthe guy of passing up a dramatic entrance.

Q.I am a retiredcollege professorwho did years of research about American slavery and slave- holders. I own a set of very racist 19th-century books that werepart of my research. It is now timefor me to reduce the size of my library, but I am afraid to sell thesebooks be- cause, giventhe mood in our country today and the rise of white supremacy, I’m afraid these books will be boughtby people who will be rein- forced in their racist ideologies. I know they can get the books in otherways (if they knew about them), and I don’t believe in burning books.I have offeredthemto several li- brariesbut to no avail. I am very worriedabout what to do. CONCERNED PHD A.Researchingpossiblesolutionsfor you, I rec- ommend trying the Jim CrowMuseum, housed at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. This is fromthe museum’s website (ferris.edu/ jimcrow):“The Jim CrowMuseumis the largest publicly accessible collection of segregation and racist artifacts in the United States. These objects are usedto teachtolerance and promote social justice. The Museumis free and open to the public; therefore,the Museumis largely dependent on donations — financial and in-kind — to en- hance its work.” Photosof variousexhibitsfromthe museum show a widevariety of curated bigotry — gath- ered for the purpose of educating the public about the deep shame of America’s racist history. Pointedly, the museum’s website notes that they are currentlybeingsomewhat floodedwith donations.I take this as a good sign, as Ameri- cansbecomemore sensitiveto the books,films, toys, products, signage, and other cultural mes- sages that onlya generation ago mighthave seemedacceptable(or merelyembarrassing)to white Americans,but are now quiteappropriate- ly seen for what they are: abhorrentsignifiersof racism. The museum might have ideas for how to handle your books. Otherwise,I well understand your reluctance to burn these books. However, if you are not able to place themin a reputablecollection, and if you believe that these booksare NOTunique and rep- resent historical racist ideas readily available elsewhere to scholars, thenI think you should consider destroying themin a symbolic fashion. Perhaps you could shred themand add the shred-

ded material as mulch for a garden. Let some- thing beautiful or nutritious growfrom theseugly ideas. Mark the occasion by donating to a cause fur- thering racial understanding. Perhaps the Jim CrowMuseum could use funding to add staff to handle their growing collection.

Q.A year ago, I found out that my wife had been secretly talking to another guy. Three weeks ago, she came clean to me about sleeping with him last year and having a brief af- fair with him. I don’t know what to do whenit comesto the marriage at this point. I’m not sure if we should workit out or if we should get divorced. In this context, amendswould in- volve a stated, steady desire to regain your trust, as well as working with you to repair the damage to your marriage. A therapist can workwith the two of you if you chooseto attemptto repairyourrelationship;a therapist workingwith you alone can help you to cope with this betrayal.

Q.“Worried” had the gall to speculate about a ba- by’s DNA and racial heritage, and then was stupid enough to ask, “Am I terrible for thinking this?” I was cheeringwhenI readthe first line of your answer: “Yes, you’re pretty terrible.” As the parent of biracialsiblings who have very different skin tone from each other, I appre- ciate that you seemto understandthe nuanceof skin color.
