Your weekend cookouts are always a lot of fun, but
you could do without the pesky mosquitoes and
other insects that always come around. To keep
them away, toss a few sprigs of rosemary or sage
on your grill or charcoal while you cook. As the
herbs heat up, they release their scent, which is
pleasing to humans but will send pests packing!

The worst part about wash-
ing curtains? Finding time
to iron them. What can help:
Take them out of the dryer
before they’re completely
dr y, hang t hem back up and
slip butter k nives in t he bot-
tom hem of both curtains.
The weight of the knives
will pull the fabric down,
forcing it to straighten.
When the curtains are dry,
remove the knives. Voilà—
no more wrinkles!

You snagged a great
deal on an end table
at the f lea market last
weekend, but the wood
needs to be refinished.
To make sanding it a bit
easier, try this: Wrap
a piece of sandpaper
around a tennis ball
and use it to get into the
curved areas. The round
shape gives you more
control and fits into the
curves better. So easy!

Rather than buying pricey
cleansers to rid your appli-
ance of odors and hard-
water spots, try this: Fill
a coffee cup with 1 cup of
lemon juice and place it
upright in the top rack of
the dishwasher. Then run
the appliance, set on steam
dr y. The citric acid w i l l
dissolve the deposits and
neutralize smells.

“We were doing some work on the
house and I had to take apart my desk
chair to move it into the den, but I wor-
ried I wouldn’t remember where all
t he pieces went when it was time to put
it back together. So I poked the hard-
ware through a piece of cardboard and
labeled which part of the chair each
one was for. It worked! I was able to
reassemble it without a problem!”

Wrap bristles in foil and secure with
a rubber band, says Chloe Haas. The
aluminum foil will lock in moisture.
Place the brush in a resealable con-
tainer with a damp sponge, says
Tracey Vargas. The water in the
sponge will keep the bristles wet.
