20 British Patchwork & Quilting AUGUST 2019

As ever, a wonderfully warm sunny day welcomed me as I headed down to Sandown
Racecourse in Esher, Surrey for this year’s National Quilt Championships. As one of the
oldest competition quilt shows in the UK, there is always plenty to delight the eye both
from the quilts on display and the array of traders.

The Overall Champion winning quilt was an
absolutely stunning hexagon quilt made by
Annelize Littlefair. Her ‘Rainbow Quilt for my
Rainbow Child’ was made up of over 12,
half inch hexagons and had been pieced by
hand. I’m not quite sure how you count up
that many hexies, other than doing a bit of
maths! I loved the border and edging of this
quilt too, take a look at the detail shots to fully
appreciate her quilting which was done on
her hand-guided longarm. ‘Rainbow Quilt for
my Rainbow Child’ also came fi rst in the Bed
Quilts category and was awarded the awards
for Piecing and Traditional Patchwork.
