FEATURE // national quilt championships

quilt stitched on dyed leather. The feathers were cut using a
Sissix die cutter and were hand painted to add to the feathery
look. A heavy shadow made it diffi cult to photograph this quilt.
The quilt was also Sylvia Critcher’s Judge’s Choice. Third place
was awarded to Ferret and ‘Midwinter’s Day’, a very un-Ferret
quilt if I may be so bold but one made from leftovers from
another quilt which she quilted overnight whilst she kept an
American friend company.

The largest category as usual was the Bed Quilt category
which was won by the Overall Champion quilt. Second place
went to ‘Ahmran Eala’ by Sandie Lush. The quilt also won
the Wholecloth award. Unfortunately, the lighting made it
diffi cult to take a photo without shadow on wholecloth quilts
so do take a look at the detail image to see Sandie’s quilting.
Third place went to Ferret and ‘Gravity – The Constellations’, a
pattern by Jaybird Quilts with added bling.

The remaining categories were the Group Quilt category
which was won by Pinewood Quilters and ‘Stress x 7’, a design
inspired by ‘Triad Interlock’ by Marilyn Doheny. Second place
went to Quilt Pals and their ‘Graffi ti Wall’; a long distance
collaboration between Rectory Quilters of New Milton and
Hayling Island Piecemakers. Third place went to Trudy
Smethurst and Chaucer Quilters and ‘My Favourite Things’.
The Under 16 quilt category was won by Isabelle Hawley and
her wall hanging, ‘Flamingo Refl ections’ with second place
awarded to Lillia May Bowsher with her entry ‘Water Views’.
