c. Press seams to one side.
3a. Place shaped panel
wadding piece on wrong
side of joined squares.
Ensure seam lies along
centre of base.
b. Note position of
buttonholes and fuse
3" interfacing squares
on wrong side of fabric
pieces and underneath
wadding as before, illust. 5.
4a. Tack wadding and fabric layers together.
b. Working with wadding side uppermost,
stitch inside each buttonhole as before
ensuring you do not stitch into wadding.
5a. Place large stitched joined squares
piece right side up on work surface and
place wadding/fabric sandwich on top
with fabric pieces right sides together.
b. Stitch around outside edges stitching
close to edge of wadding as possible,
without stitching into wadding. Start
stitching at bottom angled point and end
stitching at angled point on top edge.
c. Repeat on opposite half of panel to
leave both short edges of base unstitched,
illust. 6.
6a. Trim seam allowance down to ¼" on
all edges except unstitched ends of base,
illust. 7a.
b. Clip curves and corners as before,
illust 7b.
7a. Unpick large temporary stitches along
base seam and turn piece right side out
through turning gap.
b. Take care to ensure smooth edges.
c. Press well.
d. Stitch turning gap closed, stitching
through all layers. Do not stitch gaps
closed at each end of base rectangle.

b. Do not trim bottom edge.
c. Seam allowance at bottom edge
should be pressed up onto wadding on
both sides, illust. 3b.
9a. Turn bag piece right side out through
turning gap, taking care to ensure edges
are smooth.
b. Press well.
c. Do not stitch turning gap closed.



  1. Repeat to make second outer bag
    piece, illust. 4.


SHAPED PANEL SECTION
1a. Place wadding base rectangle along
lower edge of one, shaped panel section
wadding piece, butting edges together.
b. Using wide zigzag stitch, join wadding
pieces together.
c. Join second shaped panel wadding
piece to opposite edge of base rectangle
in same way.
2a. Take two, 15½" squares cut from
same fabric and join squares together
along bottom edge with ½" seam.
b. Join remaining two, 15½" squares
together but stitch middle 8" of seam
with a large stitch. These large stitches
are temporary and will be unpicked when
piece is turned right side out.


STITCHING SLITS AND
BUTTONHOLES
1a. Choose a tight zigzag stitch on
your machine as close as possible to
buttonhole stitch.
b. Use an open toe foot if possible.
2a. Working from right side and using
outline stitches stitched earlier as a
guide, stitch along long side of slits and
across both ends on all eight slits on
both bag sections.
b. Stitch around buttonholes on
shaped panels in similar manner.
3a. Carefully cut between buttonhole
stitching on slits, illust. 8.
b. Trim any stray threads.
4a. Attach buttons back to back on
each side of bag sections. Use marks
on pattern as a guide.
b. You will have four pairs of buttons
in total.

JOIN SECTIONS
1a. Slip unstitched base ends into gap
at lower edge of each bag section, illust. 9.
b. Centre of both bag sections should
be in line.
c. Use your cutting mat to check pieces
are parallel.
d. Pin in place and stitch securely to
close 8" opening in the seam.

HANDLES
1a. Take 5" contrast strips for handles
and trim strips so they are approx. 22"
long.
b. Adjust length of strips as desired.
2a. Cut two strips from fusible
interfacing the same width and length.
b. Fuse strips to wrong side of handle
strips.
