58 British Patchwork & Quilting AUGUST 2019

BLOCK 8 – FAT POINTED
DRESDEN STAR
Louisa used a blue print and a multi print
to make these super-sized Dresden Plates
which make a striking six pointed star.

CUTTING

  1. From cream cut:
    one, 13½" square.

PREPARATION
1a. Trace Dresden Plate template given
full size on Pattern Sheet six times onto
thick paper.
b. Cut out carefully on lines.
2a. Take one paper piece and a dab
little glue on paper. Stick paper piece to
wrong side of multi print.
b. Cut out adding approx. ¼" seam
allowance, illust. 1a.
3a. Using sharp scissors, snip into seam
allowance along bottom curved edge.
b. Ensure you stop cutting a couple of
threads away from edge of paper.
4a. Run some glue along curved bottom
edge of paper piece and fold fabric seam
allowance over edge of paper, pulling
gently to ensure a nice sharp edge,
illust. 1b.
b. Run some glue up left edge of paper

piece and fold fabric over in same way,
illust. 1c.
c. Continue basting edges until shape
is completely glue basted, illust. 1d.

  1. Make total of three plates each in
    multi print and blue print.

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING
1a. Knot your thread and bring it up
from behind seam allowance of one
Dresden Plate, illust. 2a.
b. Place two different Dresden plates
right sides together and place a binding
clip, if you have one, at opposite end to
hold secure. Working from back, bring
needle through very edges of both
shapes towards front, illust. 2b.
c. Pull thread tight and then take it
over the top and through from back
again, illust. 2c.
d. Continue to sew along seam,
bringing thread through loops of last
couple of stitches to secure, then cut
thread.

  1. Continue joining Dresden Plates in
same way with tight whipped stitch,
joining last two plates to complete ring,
    illust. 3.

APPLIQUÉ
1a. Spray complete ring with a gentle
starch and press with a dry hot iron,
paying particular attention to inner
and outer edges so you don’t lose that
sharp fold when you come to needle
turn appliqué.
b. Gently pull back seam allowances
and remove papers.
