MINIATURE QUILTS

Many of us have seen Kumiko Frydl’s exquisite miniatures. In this

amazing book she explains her methods.

The blocks are foundation pieced on greaseproof paper and machine

sewn with very small stitches. She prefers tightly woven fabric, water

soluble thread and very thin polyester wadding.

The scale of the piecing is extraordinary. Four Schoolhouse

blocks each 1½" square in a 9" x 9½" quilt. Mission Impossible 2

has a one hundred and twenty eight pointed Mariner’s Compass

in a 5½" block.

The quilts also have the quilting designs, some are hand quilted,

some are machine quilted. Embroidery and appliqué are clearly

explained. Every pattern is included in the inserted pages.

The bold bright projects all have words or phrases appliquéd on them in
diff erent styles and sizes. The pull-out sheets have seven full sized alphabets,
from capital to cursive letters, numbers and symbols.
Most are wall hangings and cushions. The two quilts have simple instructions
and assume prior knowledge by the quilt maker. The word ‘FREEDOM’ on one is
made with small hexagons, fused on with raw edges, but secured by quilting.
An excellent section on appliqué techniques demonstrates
many methods from whip stitching to zigzag overstitching
and bias strips.
