ENGLISH PAPER PIECING, A STITCH IN TIME
SHARON BURGESS © 2018

An excellent introduction covers all the stages to create these
paper pieced hand sewn items. All the templates are given
with diagrams of the embroidery stitches.

Templates are always glued, not tacked, in place. Fussy cut
pieces make intricate patterns.

Often ‘vintage’ linen embroidery and lace are added, e.g.
a folding needlework container (13" x 23" when open)
combines hexagons, clamshells and scraps of embroidered
linen.

The largest project is a 35" x 40" quilt, decorated with
appliquéd hexagon fl owers, the smallest is 3½" in diameter,
a cover for a tape measure.

The instructions for the hand sewn delicate projects need
careful reading. There are colourful photos but the small pale
grey print can be hard to read.

WOOL MINIS
KATHY BROWN © 2018

Another in the ‘lunch hour’ series, small items to be picked up in
spare moments. The fourteen wool appliqué projects often have a
seasonal theme. The appliqué shapes use freezer paper templates,
glue to attach them and are decorated with embroidery. Each motif
has a life size diagram with stitching instructions.

Plastic wrapping sheet ‘Press and Seal’ is used and stitched through.
Isn’t it questionable to use plastic in needlework at the present
moment?

Small mats and panels decorate strange objects, e.g. a four-sided
grater has a snowman on one side and there is a cover for the
bristles on a broomstick.

PIN PALS
CARRIE NELSON © 2018

The basic instructions for all the forty pincushions are the same, only the fi nished shapes
and patchwork/appliqué diff er. Firmness and weight are essential. Those made solely for
decoration are fi lled with crushed walnut shells and those to be used have sand, rice or sawdust.

Small patchwork and appliqué blocks have 1" squares, triangles and hexagons. The seams are
trimmed to^1 ⁄ 8 ", pressed open and thin cotton wadding added before quilting.

Most pincushions are 4" in size but there are also cubes, cylinders, ‘humbugs’
and ‘squashed melon’ shapes. They would make delightful small gifts.
