country. Zeller paints in a naturalistic
style, relying on the color and form as the
main media, striving to achieve a decora-
tive effect, symbolic and synthesizing
selected ideas. In addition to symbolic
scenes, she prefers portrait, flower scenes,
still life and landscapes.
Jesi Pace-Berkeley quotes Oscar Wilde,
“Every portrait that is painted with feeling
is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.”


She adds that her faces capture “split-
second ‘moments’ of life. I leave part of the
painting unfinished in an attempt to invite
the viewer to finish the piece in his or her
mind’s eye.”
“In my paintings I want to bring
attention to the talented women who
are engaged in unconventional work,
repairing and operating steam engines
or other heavy equipment,” says artist
Lee Alban. “I strive to produce figurative

paintings and portraits which describe the
delicate beauty of women, contrasted by
images of massive industrial machinery.
I use some models in my work but most
of the women actually work on steam
locomotives and vintage steam-driven
farm equipment. When I began this series
I was mainly interested in the juxtaposi-
tion of women and machines and creating
beautiful portraits, but after receiving
many accolades and testimonials from
