Pay-and-play events
were back in the pits for repairs
within the fi rst hour. 7ome were
fi xable, howeZer others were not.
The main source of problems
seemed to be steering issues. Tom
Britten, for example, was Zery
happy with the performance of his
recently fi tted T( engine, but its
steering pump was pushing out
too much pressure for his older
steering box to cope with, resulting
in a set of blown seals.
ak (ambrauskas was haZing
issues here, too. ,is full hydraulic
system was not playing ball ̄ but
more worrying was the fact that
the fault was not traceable, putting
him out Uuite early in the day. There
were a couple of issues with tyres
coming off rims, too, but these were
remedied by nothing more onerous
than throwing on the spare wheel.
One remarkable aspect of this
eZent, howeZer, was someone who
didn’t break down. Alan (eZonport
has had a catalogue of issues oZer
the years and can usually be relied
upon to be sitting in the paddock
fi xing things with an hour of the
start ̄ howeZer much to eZeryone’s
amazement, on this occasion he Nust
kept going and going
A challenge is set up in the hope
that collecting 0 punches is Nust
about achieZable by the top crews,
with only the Zery best complet-
ing their whole card and being
giZen a second. On this occasion,
howeZer, six teams managed to do
this, so the organisers concluded
that maybe the eZent wasn’t Uuite
tough enough. Or perhaps the top
trucks’ capabilities haZe moZed on
yet again
;ith Nust three Zehicles running
in Class 1, >ak (ambrauskas and
Mark .ohnson got the bronze medal
place despite their early retirement.
7econd went to Richard 0ott and
7eb 4arkes on 201 points, but Rhys
,utchinson and (an Mann were on
another leZel with an astounding
6. This was the 6th highest score
oZerall, and higher than any truck
in Class 2.
The organisers held their hands
up to an error with the scores in
Class 2, as Tom 7harp and Tom .ol-
liffe had mistakenly been placed in
Class . They had in fact taken top
spot in Class 2 with 626 points,
but this was only discoZered after
the awards had been handed out.
.ohnny .ohnson and Tracey
7tafford, who had been awarded
the top spot, were in fact 2nd with
0 points, while rd were Vinnie
,arper and Colin Masters on 0.
Class traditionally has the high-
est number of competitors, and this
eZent was no exception ̄ leading to
a fi erce battle for the honours, with
some Zery close scores. Missing
out on a podium place by only 6
points were 7imon ;ard and Austin
.ames, but in the end rd went to
Russell Bedford and .ames Burgess
on 10, points. Ahead of them
were 7teZe +rant and .oe ,ood, on
11,0 points, while the top spot
went to 0uke ;akerlen and Rupert
(enne on 11,2.
The competitor who was inNured
in Round 1 continues to make good
progress in his recoZery, and the
Odyssey Challenge progresses too.
Round will haZe happened by the
time you read this, howeZer with
half the season still to come there’s
still a whole lot of winching to do
